How to qualify for Medicaid in Georgia

As your age goes up and your income goes down, you probably are considering applying for Medicaid. Medicaid is a federal program that provides health services to low-income families. However, each state administers the program and therefore has the power to set requirements for eligibility and determine the type and length of services.

If you want to apply for Medicaid in Georgia, you first must see if you qualify for the program. An experienced attorney can help you determine eligibility and submit an application for the best chances of acceptance.

Medicaid requirements in Georgia

In order to be under Medicaid, you must be a U.S. citizen and Georgia resident, with no minimum length of residency. Your income must fall into certain brackets based on the size of your household, all sources of financial support and assets you own. If you are married, your spouse's financial contributions and property may also play a role. Note that transferring assets too soon, in large amounts or incorrectly may end up disqualifying you from getting Medicaid for a few years. If you worry about being above the income level, talk to your lawyer about options you have.

Specific programs also come with criteria. For example, the Aged, Blind and Disabled program is for those who are over 65 or disabled (including being legally blind or needing long-term care). For the family program, you must be pregnant or a parent taking care of children. Other programs are for cancer patients or those who do not qualify for Medicaid but can still receive some benefits.

You will need to submit evidence that you meet the requirements through documents such as your Social Security card, pay stubs, tax statements and proof of residency.

What about Medicare?

Medicare is another federal health program but focuses on those who are at least 65 years old or have a disability. Your circumstances may allow you to qualify for both.
